I had a special treat, photographing not yet two-wee-old Matthew this past Saturday. You see, it was for some special friends, Chris and Zahra. I have known Chris for a long time, since my first semester in College. I came in mid-year, Chris lived on the dorm floor below mine, and he made me feel right at home that first week there. We don’t get together a lot, but I consider him one of my dearest friends. Now that includes Zahra. Back when I was shooting sailboat racing almost exclusively, he drove my photo boat for me in several regattas. A shot of Chris and my then girlfriend, now wife Gretchen down in Key West, Circa 1994.. She calls that hair look “Monchichie.”
Here he is in the middle of the ocean on the way from the Bahamas to North Carolina, in 2012, savoring a home made pizza that Gretchen made for us. Let me tell you, home made pizza is good, when sailing for days at a time, it is heavenly. But I digress.
When I heard that Zahra was pregnant, I certainly was excited for them. I love to photograph special moments and events for friends and family when I can, but I don’t take it as an insult if they don’t ask. So when Zahra recently reached out and asked if I would photograph little Matthew Rahman, I answered yes without hesitation. We started shooting after his noontime feeding, and the guy was so perfect, well, I have not spent a lot of time with newborns, so I was a bit in awe. Her are my favorite shots from the session.
