We had an amazing sail from Calabash Bay, Long Island, to New Bight, Cat Island yesterday. Alchemy averaged 6.7 knots on the sailing portion between the islands, helped by a 1+ knot current. The entire run was about 45 miles, this was easily the fastest extended sailing we have ever done on her. Winds were averaging perhaps 15kts, waves were 3-5 feet, with about a three foot swell out in the open. Video forthcoming (along with the previous one I promised), whenever we can get decent internet access again.
Our plans are to stay here for a few days while some stronger winds and weather passes through, and then make our way to Eluethera. When I (Chris) was in high school, my family mom and siblings spent a week ther along with our Aunt Sue and Cousin David, after our uncle Bob died from leukemia. It was a very memorable trip, and the last time we ever saw David. He tragically died in a car accident the day before he was to wed (and we were to see him again). So I have always wanted to make it back there.
From Eluthera, we will either go up to the Abacos, stopping a few paces before heading back to the states, or sail to Lucaya or West end, and back to the states from there.
What an adventure you are having. Don and I really have fond memories of our sailing days, We are looking forward to any pictures we can retrieve, We spent a week in the Abacos with friends who had a timeshare. We walked every morning to the bakery for fresh bread that made us run back to the condo. The smell was too much !!
